Dr Pieter Le Roux, based at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape, has won the SSEM sponsored award for original research in the field of Anaesthesiology.

The topic and abstract of his winning research presentation:
The chronotropic effect of remifentanyl on the isolated rat heart.

Exerpt from Research Abstract:

"In the absence of readily available intravenous beta blockers, a number of
alternatives have been considered. Remifentanyl has become a mainstay to
ensure heart rate control in cardiac- and ENT surgery. The mechanism is
unclear - the negative chronotropic effect has been assumed to be an
indirect effect via a decrease in central sympathetic nerve activity. We
investigated a direct mechanism via activation of opioid receptors on the
myocardium of the isolated rat heart."
