SSEM Mthembu Medical hosted a two day interactive workshop on Donor Safety & Phlebotomy Techniques in Zambia on 12th & 13th January 2012. The workshop was attended by representatives of Zambian National Blood Transfusion Service (ZNBTS) from the nine provinces in Zambia and was held in the Boardroom of the University Teaching Hospital of Lusaka. There were a total of 26 representatives and three Managers who participated. The workshop was opened by the Medical Director of ZNBTS Dr Joseph Mulenga & closed by Mr Alex Chikwese the Financial Director ZNBTS.

Sr Heather Money previously from Western Province Blood Transfusion, now a Phlebotomy Consultant, was the Workshop Facilitator. Topics covered in the workshop were Donor Recruitment, Selection of Low Rick Donors, Phlebotomy Procedure & Safety at the Donation Centre. Interactive practical sessions were held & representatives carried out new venepuncture techniques. Carol Collett from SSEM Mthembu Medical was the course co-ordinator and held a session on JMS Blood Management Systems. They representatives had an opportunity to share their experiences from their donation clinics around Zambia.

The workshop ended with an exciting collaborative session on Waste Management & Handling of Bio-Hazardous Waste. This was presented by Mr David Chama Technical Manager from ZNBTS and was of great value to all present. The two day session ended with each representative being photographed receiving their attendance certificates. Similar workshops on a variety of topics are planned for later in 2012.
