In 2004, Nihon Kohden developed a new technology of estimated Continuous Cardiac Output (esCCO) in collaboration with several universities. Cardiac output has traditionally been measured by inserting a catheter into the pulmonary artery. Nihon Kohden's new esCCO technology can measure cardiac output continuously and painlessly by calculation from ECG and SpO2.

 

PWTT

Nihon Kohden engineers discovered a correlation between the PWTT (pulse wave transit time) and stroke volume, and found that cardiac output can be estimated by using PWTT and heart rate (HR). After that the theoretical background was verified by animal studies and a multi-center study proved that esCCO has sufficient accuracy for routine clinical use.

All that's required are familiar sensors and procedures to monitor basic vital signs (ECG, Sp02 and blood pressure). The esCCO technology is designed to provide accurate performance without specialized medical skill.
